In 1980, he entered Beijing University's Department of English Language and Literature after three times of high school entrance examinations. After graduating in 1985, he remained at the university as a teacher.

In September 1991, Minhong left Beijing University to enter the field of private education. He worked as a teacher and manager in several private schools in Beijing before founding New Oriental School on November 16th, 1993.

By the year 2000, New Oriental had occupied about 80% of the out-bound training market in Beijing and over half nationwide with more than two hundred thousand students trained annually.

New Oriental also expanded into other fields such as computer training and consulting services for students studying abroad or seeking further education overseas.

Minhong has published several books on English teaching and learning including "GRE Vocabulary Selected" (known as "the Red Book"), "GRE Vocabulary Reverse Dictionary", "English Word Roots & Prefixes Memory Guide", etc., which have gained popularity among learners both domestically and internationally.

He was recognized by many media outlets for his contributions to China's educational development. In addition to being known as one of China's most successful entrepreneurs during his time at New Oriental Education Technology Group Limited where he served as Chairman & CEO since its inception until June

2019 when he stepped down due to health reasons; Minhong also held various positions within organizations like Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), National Youth Federation Committee Member (CNYF), etc., making him an influential figure not only within academia but also across industries related to education worldwide especially given that seventy percent

of all foreign students attending top universities globally are alumni from this institution founded by none other than Minhong himself - so much so that people often call him 'The Father Of Overseas Study'.
